The strangest exit we ever made
We ended our patrols a number of different ways.
Some times bored and tired waiting for our choppers back to the rear. On rare occasions we just walked out. Now and then we were running he/ll bent for our lives with the NVA hot on our heels.
But late in my tour we did a 3-4 day fighting recon in a large middle class sort of village (with big hedgerows lining the walkways). The big overgrown ville they said was being used as a NVA/VC base camp or transit station.
They were right.
We made contact moments after we entered the ville for the first time when we ran into a roving patrol of theirs. We made contact at least -2x or more a day after that.
Small short engagements
Finally, right after surviving a nasty ambush they sprung on us about 3 am as we were moving down a trail, the word came down that we were leaving.
We would regroup then walk out of the ville and head back into the mountains.
As we started out----as quiet as any group of reconners could be---- we heard this strange tapping sound to our rear----off to one side----then moments later we heard the same strange tapping sound more to our front but on the otherside.
As we twisted and turned the tapping sound followed us. Or remained ahead of us. And at times at the side of us.
They had us covered on all sides.
That walk to get out of that ville took maybe 45 minutes and that tapping stayed with us the whole time.
Strange does not even begin to describe the feeling.
I assumed we would be hit at any moment. But they never did. Not one single shot.
And they could have at any time they wanted. They could see us we could not see them.
I can only assume they were as happy to see us go as we were to be going.
