    'Bootneck'tales

Norway! There the Royal Marines did their Arctic and Mountain Warfare training, exercised in the snow and ice,and developed a affection for their Norwegian allies. One of the manifestations of this good will came one sunday when the long winter was comming to an end and the first signs of spring were in the air,A party of Marines decided to attend Divine Service in a small rural Norwegian Church.
The worshippers faced one obvious difficulty,Their knowledge of the Language, where it existed at all,was rudimentary.Although they would be united in sentiment with their Norwegian hosts,The associated problem of when to stand up,kneel down,or sit was fairly easy to deal with,They would follow the well established proceedure of keeping their eye's on the initiated and do as they do,To minimise the chance of error the marines congregated in a solid block at the rear of the church.
For most of the service they did not put a foot wrong. They stood, knelt and sat with observed timeliness. When as they understood it,the ceremony was approaching its close and they in conformity with the rest of the congregation, were sitting down, the pastor made a short address.A man in a pew towards the front stood up.About thirty marines stood up too.The remainder of the people in the church still seated, turned around and stared, looking mindly asonished.Young girls giggled discreetly.Young men s******ed.The marines stood their ground stolidly. When the solitary man in the front sat down so did all the marines.
Outside the church, the service over, they asked one of the many English speaking Norwegians about the cause of this little contremps.
What the pastor said,"explained their friend,"was; Will the father of the child who is to be christened on Monday please stand up Aye jr
