Well, since quitting tobacco 18 months ago it's easy for me to say whew, glad i don't smoke anymore! But there are other measures underway designed to gouge a chunk out of the rest of us

It's the same in GA too - State adds a buck, Habib down at the corner store adds a buck. They're sure enough starting to ween me off of them. Cigarettes are $6 and some change now and what's scarey is that it's cheaper than some of the Northern States. Are they up to $10 yet up there?

And, what do they do with all that tax money? They hand it over to a bunch of people that take trips to sunny spots that I'LL never get to go to! Dang Slinger, I'm mad now!

Back home a can of Grizzly, was almost $6 dollars. A pack of Marb reds were a little over $8. Now this was in Jan. I know dip is about the same price but I imagine smokes have gone up again and their trying to make it illegal to smoke in different places or in vehicles/homes with kids under 18.

"Starting seeds"

Tobacco is a relatively easy plant to grow and can be grown as far north as Canada and Alaska with the proper planning and preparation.

Tobacco seeds are extremely small (Fig. 1) not much larger than a pin prick and care should be taken when sowing seed as to not sow to thickly. Tobacco seed require warm temperatures for germination of about 75-80 degrees. Seed should be started indoors 4-6 weeks before your last frost date. Start by sprinkling the tobacco seed onto the surface of a sterile seed starting mix and lightly water in. Do not cover the seed with any soil as they need light for germination and covering can slow down germination time or if covered too deeply the seed won't germinate at all, watering in lightly is all that is needed.

Seed will begin to germinate in about 7-10 days with some tobacco varieties taking a few days longer to begin germination (Fig. 2). If your seed don't germinate right away be patient, it can take up to 2 weeks for some tobacco varieties to germinate.

The soil should be kept damp but not too soggy and should never be allowed to dry completely out. Care should be taken when watering freshly emerging tobacco seedlings because the force of the water can uproot the tiny seedlings causing them to die.

"Transplanting into trays/flats"

The next step is to transplant the tobacco seedlings into a larger container such as a pot or transplant cell tray as seen in Fig. 3. so that they can develop a good root system.
Under normal conditions the tobacco seedlings will be large enough and ready for moving into pots or cells after 3 weeks from the beginning of germination.
I normally prefer to wait until the plants largest leaf is close to the size of a dime before transplanting into cells because it is easier handling for me but seedlings can be moved anytime after they reach a size you are comfortable working with.

Transplanting into containers is easily accomplished by making a small hole into the soil and inserting the roots of the tobacco seedling and backfilling the hole with a little soil mix. Once you have them potted in, water in with a plant starter fertilize solution such as miracle grow or seaweed/fish fertilize emulsions.

This is just more "looking out for your health" crap covering up the insatiable hunger for tax revenue. It's a well known fact that government is just as addicted to "sinful" behavior as the users. Mo Money, Mo Money, Mo Money. Yet there are quite a number of our "leaders" who use the Devil's weed themselves, but being the hypocrites they are they don't do it in public or in front of the camera.
I don't know whether anyone noticed, but the "health concerns" about tobacco just happened to coincide with the rise of the computer, seems the by-product of smoking just happened to gum up the disc's and other movable parts of the machines.
As for myself, I smoked for about 50 years and would still be using if the politicians hadn't got so greedy.

In any event; Smoke em if you got em and don't expect any flak from me, however if your body can't take it and you get "sick" don't expect any sympathy from me either.

My 'Black and Milds' are 4.49 at the 7-11, and 3.50 on base.

My guess is, this will only help an 'underground economy' and eventually cost the state money (as it has here in the Great socialist republic, were smokes are well over 5.00 a pack). And our useless lemmingcrat gubbner was whining that 'revenues are down' on taxes with smokes.... (Duuhhhhh). Well, you wanted people to stop smokin, right? (Actually, those that are able just go across the line to Va where they are still reasonable).

I don't smoke but do chew tobacco. Virginia and Kentucky do not tax tobacco to the extent of most other states. While working as a consultant in Washington my first trip there I went to the grocery store to stock up. I had to go to a special counter to purchase chew. I got 10 cans and handed the lady a hundred dollar bill. She handed me 50 cents in change. This can't be right ... ok check the price ... yup it's right.

Washington makes more money off tobacco sales than the do the lottery. Next trip there I came with chew.

I'm glad that I quit about 12 years ago just for more promises of kissing from Karen and it worked.
I'm glad I quit but don't like all the rules for smokers nowdays. They just passed a law here in Asheville that you can't smoke in parks and some places outside.
Although I don't smoke anymore and don't know how I could afford it I do believe that everyone should have a choice.
I remember a few years ago a friend of mine went for breakfast and it was no smoking so we left. Drove to four or five places before we could smoke there. That was about 20 years ago.
