Problems with small unit histories.

Perhaps this same issue applies to other units, if so take action. This explains why ANGLICO history is very poorly documented:

Author Steve Selig offers his opinion as to why official ANGLICO history is difficult to find, why we aren't listed at the NMMC as a unit that participated in the Korean War, for example. "I have talked to the U.S. Marine Corps History Division in Quantico, Virginia on the subject of unit participation acknowledgement for ANGLICO during the Korean War. ANGLICO does not officially receive UNIT acknowledgement for Korean War service nor will it receive UNIT participation acknowledgement for the Korean War. ELEMENTS or detachments of ANGLICO have received 1 Presidential Unit Citation and 2 Navy Unit Commendations for service during the Korean War."

Steve continues with "The U.S. Flag Manual states: "an award will not be made to a larger unit for actions of one or more of its component units." "

My own opinion is that the Flag Manual policy is more of an excuse, that units like ANGLICO that operate with some degree of independence, engender some resentment at high levels. Some are not willing to lift a finger to assist with documenting the accomplishments of small teams that operate, to some degree, outside the normal command structure.

Be advised that if ANGLICO Marines and Sailors do not document our own history, most of our accomplishments, like old soldiers, will simply fade away. Already, much of our early history leading up to and during the Korean War can never be recovered, because many of those great ANGLICANS have left us.

Don't let this happen to your generation. Document your history and send it to Jason Angell or Steve Selig, or post it on our ANGLICO forum at www.1anglico.org. Do this before the memories are forty years old and the names and places you thought you would never forget are fading away.

If you served with some other unit that was involved in special ops or other semi-independent endeavors, get busy and make sure your unit's history is documented.
