MOBILE, Ala. — A helicopter once used to fly presidents will be displayed at the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park in Mobile.
Park director Bill Tunnell says the helicopter expected to arrive Thursday afternoon has been used as a rescue helicopter at Naval Air Base Fallon, Nev.
It’s being taken out of service and loaned to the park courtesy of the National Museum of Naval Aviation in Pensacola, Fla.
The aircraft is now known as a HH-1N. But for two decades, it was one of a few helicopters known as VH-1N, or Marine One, the helicopter for Presidents Nixon, Ford and Reagan.
As a rescue helicopter it was painted orange and white, but Tunnell says it will be restored to its presidential look in the coming months.
