From The Archives: First U.S. troops sent to Vietnam

    Saturday, March 7, 2009

March 7, 1965 - Sunday Chronicle readers awoke to news that the Pentagon was sending two battalions of Marines to South Vietnam, the first U.S. ground combat troops sent to help fight against North Vietnamese troops. More than 58,000 U.S. troops would be killed before the fall of Saigon in 1975. In other news, the bullet-riddled body of a man in Uruguay was identified as that of a Nazi war criminal.
