North Carolina Native and World War II Veteran Tells Powerful Story About His Experiences On Iwo Jima
07-06-2007

RALEIGH, N.C. – North Carolina native and World War II Leatherneck Bill Henderson tells a powerful and inspirational story about his experiences in combat during one of the most brutal battles of the South Pacific. Higher Standard Publishers is publishing and promoting this epic tale in “From the Sands of Iwo Jima” scheduled for release August 6, 2007.

It was February 19, 1945, when twenty-three year old Lt. Bill Henderson and more than 70,000 of his fellow Marines made their way toward what is now known as Invasion Beach on Iwo Jima. They jumped off their boats with their weapons in hand, beginning a life-and-death struggle to gain a foothold on an island made up of thick, volcanic sand.

Over the course of the Second World War, Bill has survived some of the bloodiest battles of the South Pacific. But none of his past experiences prepared him for what he faced on Iwo Jima.

With his fellow Marines fighting and dying by the hundreds, like many Marines, Bill witnessed friend after friend getting mowed down by screaming Bonsai charges in a month long battle of entrenched warfare. Of the 1,200 men in the unit he helped lead, more than eighty percent would become casualties on the first day.

He was blessed to survive that deadly battle and more than sixty years later, recalls his experience in “From the Sands of Iwo Jima.” It’s a story not only about heroism in the face of conflict, but of steadfast faith and conviction. Today, Bill does not see himself as a hero. “I don’t want to appear to be something that I am not,” he said.
