TECHNICALLY, I don't think he DESERTED.
Just:
Failure to follow a DIRECT order
Conduct unbecomming...
Derilection (sp?) of DUTY
Probably something along the lines of trying to COERSE others
20+ at HARD LABOR would be my call
But.... I'm just an arm chair judge, and jury !!

Screw the politics. He abandoned the men he trained and is directly responsible for. He quit on his troops. Thats not in any Marine's character.

By your leave, Sir:
If it is decided not to publicly beat him and throw him bodily out the gate in his skivvies, then I would recommend he serve the maximum hard time, followed up with a Dishonorable Discharge. Gary Hall, Tyler, TX
