    Question Help

Hi, I'm new here and I leave for boot camp in November, but lately my parents have been trying to convince me to change my MOS and get an Associate's Degree before boot camp. My MOS is an Administrative Clerk, I haven't signed any papers yet, but my recruiters thinks I'll get the job. My parents keep telling me that my MOS is the lowest job in the Corps and that I should change it, so I looked up the internet and found Legal Services Specialist. I don't know how much better that is but. Also, today my parents told me that I should go to school instead and get an Associate's Degree and then join the Corps, but I don't want to wait 2 years to go to boot camp. What should I do?

Oh yeah, my family keeps telling me that even if I'm not in Infantry, that I could still be sent to Iraq? Do any Marines with
the two MOS's above still fight in war?

Being an admin clerk isn't all that bad. I started out as one and worked up to admin chief. As an admin clerk, you can be assigned to the grunts, air wing, command and staff billets, HQMC, a recruit depot, among other places. You just aren't limited to one area.

Also as an admin chief, I did some work in the legal field, as the legal chief got out of the Corps and there wasn't a replacement. I just had to fill in until a legal chief could be assigned to the unit.

As for being the "lowest job in the Corps," someone has to make sure that the Marines are paid correctly; that their records of promotion, duty stations, education, rifle/pistol qualification, to name just a few things. There has to be someone to look after the Marines "paper-wise."

As for going to Iraq, yes. Recently the Marines with 24th MEU at the Forward Operating Base in Kalsu, Iraq, began doing morning patrols and then coming back to work in their offices. Marines are riflemen first and foremost, even the women. I first qualified with the rifle in 1977.

So, it seems that you just need to decide if you want to be part of the Marine team or not. It's a decision you will have to make.

well, what do YOU want to do? it's YOUR life, not thiers. not that advice isn't helpfull, but NO ONE can live YOUR life but YOU. ann associates degree is NOT going to do you a whole lot of good in the Corps ( at least that I can see)

Yep ivalis, us IBM idiots backspace - as in - see that something isn't working quite right to take care of our Marines, then fall back and regroup so we can carry on our mission.

Remember all Marines are riflemen first regardless of their primary MOS. My father entered the corps as an Admin Clerk and left as a Admin Chief. He also served 2 tours in Nam, while his primary MOS was admin he served as a door gunner on a CH-46. Every job in the Corps is important, we all support each other.
