Visit their website. It lists the eligibility criteria in the "selection and training" tab at the top right.

    www.marsoc.com

    They are called "Marine Raiders".

You cannot get a MARSOC contract from your recruiter (you can get a recon contract). You must complete bootcamp, MOS school, join the fleet, and then be screened by the MARSOC screening team (just like for embassy duty, you have to be screened/accepted by the MSG screening team).

Any MOS can be screened by the screening team - don't have to be a grunt.

At what point do you know your picked?
Could you go through a year of training/preparing for MARSOC then not get picked...so wouldn't that be a year wasted?

It is possible to go through all the assessment & screening phases, and still not get the Critical Skills Operator MOS 0372 - that's why it's called assessment & screening and has different phases. Same thing can happen with Recon training - it takes over a year to advance through the training pipeline and finally end up in a Recon Battalion. A student can be dropped at any time or the student can drop themselves. One cannot simply become a Marine Raider or Recon Marine overnight. Besides the specialized training (it can take months just to get a seat at the Army's jump school for instance), it takes a long time to observe individuals to see if they possess the character traits and mental stability/toughness to make it through all the phases successfully and ultimately do the job. All candidates understand the risk of not making it through the entire process when they first apply and they must be willing to accept that risk.

For an infantry Marine, there would be no wasted time as they would simply be receiving specialized training they may be able to use as a grunt later (get jump wings for instance). For other MOS's, any time spent out of their primary MOS could be considered wasted as they were not working on skills relevant to their MOS - this is true for the more technical MOS's like aviation maintenance, air traffic controller, etc.

^^^I do think it's rare someone would make it through the entire A&S process, and not get the 0372 MOS. Just saying it's possible.
