ANNAPOLIS, Md. — Navy beat North Texas on Saturday 27-24 at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium.
Tai Lavatai entered Navy’s game Saturday afternoon against North Texas with 1:37 left in the first half, the first time in the senior quarterback’s college career he was playing as a backup.
The Midshipmen were trailing by three points. Within a few plays, they faced a third and eight. Lavatai and his surgically repaired left knee, which cost him the final four games of last season and his place atop Navy’s quarterback depth chart, scrambled for a 20-yard run.

On the next play, Lavatai hit wide receiver Nathan Kent in the corner of the end zone and celebrated by yelling in the direction of the Navy bench. With 43 seconds remaining in the half, the Mids had finally completed their first pass of the day. They also had a lead they would never relinquish in a 27-24 win.
