Al,
I flew in a bunch of 46s. They were our usual method of insertion/extraction. If you put in any 3rd Recon, it could have been us. One memorial ride was on 30 Jan 68. My team was hit hard-2 KIA and 8 WIA out of ten. (Semper Fi! Ferris and Stihler) The bird set down on the edge of a treeline, we boarded, all of us, and the pilot pulled pitch. We took fire from at least 3 twin mount 12.7s and a whole bunch of little people. At this point I'm out cold from loss of blood and don't remember a thing. We set down a mile away from our extraction point and switched to the second 46, which took us to Delta Med. This was related to me by the then CO of BLT 2/4, who happens to be my Godfather! I saw the bird when I got back from the Repose, and it was shot to pieces. Not one person got hit! Them wingwipers had some brass cajones! (only war story I ever put on the net, and one of my worst memories)
Luis needs to know what it's all about. When your brother on the right gets his blood splattered all over you, you pick him up and move to help your brother on the left. You don't join the Corps for the easy ride, and you never, ever leave a brother, whatever the cost.
Luis, there's a reason that we're the Few. Be damn sure you want it. And beware of old Marines telling war stories!

03Foxtrot, I was in all of those same places at the same time, however, I was attached to Golf Co. (Captain Frank Adams) as an S-2 Scout, you know, "glorified grunt". I spent about 6 mo. in the bush, (mostly Pipestone Canyon), about 5 months on Crow's Nest (Marble Mountains) and a couple of months in and out of the battalion area. I live in a fairly large city, bu I can count on one hand the former grunts that I've talked to. It's nice to find a site like this.

Forrest,
Great to hear from you and thanks for responding to my post. I wrote you a rather lengthy reply previously, but when I tried to post quick reply it asked me to log in again and after I did so, the screen went white and blank and my reply disappeared . I seem to always have problems with the various sites I actually decide to write on.

Forrest,
i'll try to keep it short. I have no idea what a S-2 Scout did. Did you work with the Kit Carson Scouts or our Scout-Snipers or possibly gather intelligence ? I remember Marble Mountain and Monkey Mountain, mostly from a distance. Your profile says you are still in ?

I'll have to check my profile. No, I was only in for 2 years. The S-2 Scouts were the same as the Kit Carson Scouts. I thought the Army called them Kit Carson Scouts. You could hardly miss Marble Mountain. It was in everybody's pics (at least 2/1's). We had a 106 up there and Naval Guns. A couple of Army guys on the searchlight. It was great duty. Lots of action, and no humping. The scouts ran a radar thing and then became riflemen when the snipers started in on the 106's as their buddies fired rockets into Danang. There were more scouts than companies, so we rotated fromCrow's Nest to the bush.

You are the first person in 42 years to mention the Ville of Nui Kim Son. This was a place that all of we 2/1 Marines knew well from constant patrolling. And I'm sad to say, my memories of it are clouded with sadness as well as good memories also. It was the first place that I saw an old mamasan pull up her pants leg and let loose with a straight stream and I also remember that the kids all came up to us trying to sell smokes and drinks and whatever. I also remember that their were some Marines who died there because some kids detonated a booby trap on them and from then on, I never looked at the kids in the same way. I trusted no one that was Vietnamese. I'll keep this short too because I don't want to again lose a post to the computer demons because of the length.
