Man who posed as Marine sentenced to prison

John William Rodriguez, 31, was sentenced in Maricopa County Superior Court after his conviction on charges of forgery, fraudulent schemes and presentation of a false instrument for filing.
Arizona Department of Public Safety investigators say they were first alerted to Rodriguez after a former Marine saw him introduced as a decorated veteran at a special military function. The man noticed Rodriguez's uniform was not complete and thought it was odd for someone his age to be wearing the Navy Cross and the Silver Star.
The Cross is the Navy's highest award for combat valor, and the Silver Star is the Army's third highest award for combat valor.
DPS served a search warrant at Rodriguez's home in June 2009 and uncovered several Marine uniforms and medals.
The agency said the ruse allowed Rodriguez to get discounts on airline tickets and make friends, and that he didn't have to change the registration on his car from California to Arizona.
Rodriguez is originally from California but had been living in the Phoenix area for two years before his arrest. He was unemployed and was living in the Phoenix suburb of Scottsdale, at the home of a man he met on a flight to Phoenix, without paying for his stay.
