Thanks for the info. Will be England in July on my way to Normandy.

Excuse my ignorance buy what does Three Badge refer to. I know long ago they use to give extra pay for GCB's but I believe that has stopped.

Thanks Dan! The term 3badgemarine refers to long service stripes (hash marks) one stripe for every 4 years service with 3 stripes the ultimate one can achieve, the three badge Marine was usually a long service 'Bootneck' with no ambition of promotion but was relied on for his experience within the various units.Has a 3badgemarine I did go on to serve for 25 years.Aye JR

Thanks JR for the intel and for story re. your fellow Marine's tour of the HMS Victory with his American guests. I hope they were appreciative.

Checked out profile, you Sir are one Ancient Mariner!!! You had to figure some wise a$$ Yank would notice it. And you get a double bonus, it was a retired Commander!!!

Seriously Royal Marine, I hope you keep posting here. Your background and history must be amazing. I also enjoy the comical posts from your bud Rob, the Helo driver.

Yes 3 badge my ambition was to be a 3 badge Marine but when I got married, at age 25, I thought I'd better switch on, earn extra dosh and buy a house for my 3 kids.
HMS Victory was a cushy draft which I was unable to attain; I did go onboard though when a mate was on gangway duty; can't remember his name but he was an 'old soldier' from 40 Cdo RM.
    Thanks for the thread.

And lo, there walked upon the damp surface of the planet an ancient vizier with a visage to match. His cry of "Where's my chuffing kit?" would be met with the long-suffering response, "where you left it."

A few images of HMS Victory, Nelson's flagship.

Here she is in the heart of the ancient dockyard at Portsmouth. If you look closely at the Mizzen truck you will see JR clinging steadfastly to his rum ration and refusing to come down until he is ready.

Here's a contrast between the ancient and modern. Early evening, an old ship's figure head across the water from the modern Spinnaker Tower, Portsmouth.

I know it has nothing to do with this thread but a number of years ago I bought, at a charity auction, a print of the Battle of Trafalgar with the Victory smack dab in the middle. The print was signed by the great-grandson of Lord Nelson. Probably no one else is impressed but I was, besides it was for charity.

Get this tune out of your heads if you can. I've been humming it all evening.

(To the tune of Ghost Riders in the Sky)

A three badge Bootneck went up to town,
    One dark and windy night.
And on a bench in Hyde Park, he rested on his way.
When all at once there came in sight
    A band of forty *****s;
    Padding thru' the ragged grass,
    And none were wearing drawers.

Yippee I ai, yippee ai ooh,
    Royals’ on the **** tonight.

He asked one, how much it cost,
And she said half a crown
And in two ticks, he had his nicks,
    And his trousers down.
He stuffed her on the flower bed,
    He stuffed her mighty fine,
And though she grinned it put the wind,
    Up the other thirty nine.

Yippee I ai, yippee ai ooh,
    Royals’ on the **** tonight.

On monday morn, when he returned,
    To join the happy throng:
'Twas on a visit to the heads,
    He felt something was wrong,
He went up to the sergeant,
And said - "what's this squeezing here."
    The 'stripy replied 'Gor Blimey!'
    I think you've got a tear."

Yippee I ai, yippee ai ooh,
    Royals’ on the **** tonight.

    They drafted him to Haslar,
    Although he was not willing,
They gave him jabs to dry the scabs,
    They gave him penicillin,
But 'though they cured his gonorrhoea,
    He suffered pain and grief,
And now when he goes up to town,
    He only chases beef.

Yippee I ai, yippee ai ooh,
    Royals’ on the **** tonight.

Magic, there are enough of us now to work a proper rota and keep an eye on these lads from the left hand side of the pond.

    Jim, you've proffed the middle.

I've just been informed that I'm on make and mend, so Owdun your next. Good luck lads, ring if you need me.
