Former Marine found guilty in 'trust me' murder

An Onslow County jury found a former Camp Lejeune Marine guilty today of second-degree murder for killing a friend during a 2009 “trust me” game.

Michael Everett Smith, 21, of Bridgewater Court, was sentenced to eight to 10½ years in prison in the death of Bryan Thorkelson, who died at Onslow Memorial Hospital of a gunshot wound to the head, according to warrants and police statements.

“The state is satified with the jury’s verdict,” said Senior Assistant District Attoreny Mike Maultsby, who tried the case.

Prosecutors proved Smith shot Thorkleson at his kitchen table during a game in which participants took turns pointing a handgun at each other.

Thorkleson’s mother spoke about the loss of her son before sentencing.
