Deputy Killed In Wrong-Way Crash
Ex-Marine Survived By Wife, 4 Children
POSTED: Thursday, January 14, 2010

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. -- A 44-year-old St. Johns County deputy on his way to work early Thursday morning was killed in a crash with an SUV going the wrong way on state Road 9A.
The Florida Highway Patrol said Deputy James Anderson Jr. was traveling south on 9A just past Baymeadows Road about 3:30 a.m. Thursday when he was hit head-on by an SUV traveling north in the southbound lane.
Troopers said Honda Element, driven by Kris Caudilla, 26, of Jacksonville, landed upside down after hitting the deputy's cruiser.
Both Anderson and Caudilla were flown to Shands-Jacksonville Medical Center with serious injuries. The deputy's death was reported just after 7 a.m.
Deputy John Anderson Jr.
St. Johns County Sheriff David Shoar said that Anderson was headed to work at the time of the crash. Shoar said Anderson talked to several deputies at the crash scene and called his wife on a cell phone before he was flown to the hospital. The family's pastor said that the answer machine picked up and Anderson was asking his wife to pick up the phone, but by the time she got to it the call ended.
"He was a big bear of a guy with a wonderful, wonderful outlook on life," Shoar said. "James was a man of strong faith."
Anderson had served 20 years in the Marine Corps before getting a job with the Putnam County Sheriff's Office. In March 2007, Anderson transferred to the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office so he could be closer to his family in Jacksonville.
"When you lose a comrade, you use a partner, a little piece of all of us dies," Shoar said.
Channel 4 was told that Caudilla had multiple injuries, but they were not believed to be life-threatening.
An off-duty Jacksonville Beach police officer driving his personal vehicle on 9A between Baymeadows Road and Philips Highway called FHP to report an SUV driving the wrong way. Officer H. Tawfik said he had to swerve off the road to avoid being hit by the vehicle, with he said was traveling at a high rate of speed.
One minute later, Caudilla's SUV slammed into the St. Johns County cruiser.
The FHP said blood was drawn from Caudilla, but it would take some time to determine if alcohol was a factor in the wreck. Troopers were also looking into the speed of the SUV and said fog was in the area at the time.
The southbound lanes of 9A were closed to traffic at Baymeadows until just after 8 a.m. Northbound traffic was also congested due to emergency vehicles blocking one lane.
