Marine sentenced for sex assault

PORTLAND, Maine — A 19-year-old Marine from Maine has been sentenced to 90 days in prison after pleading guilty to two counts of misdemeanor assault on a 15-year-old girl.

The Portland Press Herald is reporting that Brian Nugent of Westbrook pleaded guilty to the reduced charges on Monday.

Nugent, who was arrested last spring at Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., is scheduled to deploy to Afghanistan in March. He has already served about 18 days and will be allowed to return to Fort Bragg, N.C., for training on Friday.

Prosecutors said that he must serve the rest of his sentence when he returns from Afghanistan.

Nugent was originally charged with two counts of gross sexual assault, punishable by up to 20 years in prison.
