Honorary Marine

I need a copy of marine corps order 5060.19 award the title Honroary Marine. I'm trying to find out what it takes to mominate a friend for the title.

For some reason http://www.usmc.mil isn't working properly. That is the only place I know of to get the Marine Corps Order, as even about.com will just redirect you to the usmc.mil page. But, you can try to make it work, who knows when it will be back up. This is the link to the order.

There is only one honorary Marine that I knopw of, and that is because he loved the Marne Corp so much that the Marine Corp madew him one because he wasn't going to live long emough to become a true Marine. they had an article about him in Leatherneck Magazine about a year ago, I can't remember the exact date but thios little kid was harder than most Marines I know.

Guys, there have been several. We had one here in Central Florida a few years ago. He was a very ill young man in a wheel chair who had always wanted to be a Marine Harrier Pilot. The CMDT swore him in, the local MCL got him a set of dress blues and our beloved USMC arranged for him to ride in a jump jet. The kid passed about a year later. Also during the Korean War an 11 y.o. tried to enlist after seeing the movie shorts. This was in the mid west somewhere. The local recruiting staff arranged for him to go to DC, where the CMDT swore him in and had him as his personal guest at the Commandant's Marine Corps Birthday Ball. He took the CMDT's daughter! This made the cover of Life Magazine at the time. (Note: It turned out this "Honorary Marine" never went into any branch of the service, he also lives in Florida.

Well WUNgUN I guess I can tell you why I want to have my friend reconized as a honorary Marine.. This friend of mine has gone through more hardships in his life than anyone else I know and still kept fighting. His father was a mean drunk and would try and kill him, his mother, and his brother, but never succeeded, thank god. At 7 he had an operation to remove tumors from his spine. And for the next five years endured radiation therapy. While in highschool he played football. His family has a history of military service, mostly in the Marines, except for his father who never served. He would have gone into the Marines but wound up in a wheelchair, I'm not really sure why that happened. It may have been related to the tumors but I'm not sure. He attained a blackbelt in Aikido and went on to be an instructor. He worked as a security guard for a casino while going to collage to get masters in criminal-pshycology. Now his currently works for U.S. Customs. About 4 weeks ago he went into the hospital for what they thought was an infection, turns out it's worse. It seems that after 30 years the tumors are back and with a vengence. The tumors cover his entire spine and have completely taken over 2 vertibrea. When I got out of the Corps in 94 my attitude was far from rosey. Eventually I met this man in a wheelchair who know more of the Corps than I did. At first I thought he was an ^$$hole, but as I got to know him I realize that he was an ^$$hole. He became one of my closest friends. He also help me regain my pride in being a Marine, and because of that I lead a much more honorable life then I did before. This man is the epitome of what it means to be a Marine and never got the chance to earn that title. And even now as he lies on his deathbed he is the kind of man I want to be. Does that answer your question? p.s. I finally got a copy of th order. And you all would be surprised at how many and who have become honorary Marines. Examples: A Navy doctor for his work in medicine. A Boeing exec for helping keep the V-22 Osprey program going. And, I believe it was the president of Marriot hotels for all the good work with the D.C. Marine Corps Balls over the past several years. So if they can become honorary Marines so can my friend.

I was mistaken about one of the facts about my friend. He didn't play highschool football just neighborhood football. And as the story goes they were undefeated.

1. Situation. The American people have always had deference for
their Marines. The Marine Corps benefits from this special
relationship, and from recognizing individuals in the civilian
community who have made significant contributions to the Corps,
by bestowing upon them the title Honorary Marine.
2. Cancellation. MCO 5060.19.
3. Mission. To establish policies regarding official recognition
of individuals who are not members of the United States Marine
Corps.
4. Execution.
a. Commander’s Intent and Concept of Operations
(1) Commanders Intent. Intent is to use this program to
recognize deserving individuals and strengthen the bonds between
the Corps and community. The title Marine is a unique and valued
designation that affords a special distinction to the men and
women who earn it. It is the responsibility of those who bear the
title Marine to ensure it continues to symbolize the honor and
distinction that have always been associated with the U.S. Marine
Corps.
(2) Concept of Operations. The Commandant of the Marine
Corps can officially recognize an individual as an Honorary Marine
to acknowledge their contributions to the community and the Marine
Corps.
b. Subordinate Element Missions
(1) Commanding generals, commanding officers, and officers
in charge may nominate individuals they consider deserving of the
title Honorary Marine.
(2) Requests to recognize an individual will be submitted
to the Commandant of the Marine Corps via the Director, Public
Affairs who acts as the central authority for coordinating all
requests. Director, Public Affairs will determine the qualifications
and appropriateness of the subject nominations and staff all proposals
to SJA, CMC Counsel, M&RA and then to ACMC/CMC for final decision.
(3) The Commandant of the Marine Corps will exercise final
authority for all Honorary Marine requests.

c. Coordinating Instructions
(1) An individual may be designated an Honorary Marine only
under unique circumstances. Individuals who may qualify include:
(a) A terminally ill child.
(b) An individual who has made significant contributions
to the Marine Corps and for whom any lesser form of recognition
would be unsatisfactory.
(c) Deceased individuals when deceased’s actions or
contributions on behalf of the Marine Corps preceding death, or
circumstances surrounding demise make award appropriate and in the
best interests of the Marine Corps.
(d) A person who has established close ties that are
beneficial to the Marine Corps and works diligently to further
our mission, both in the public and private sectors.
(2) Award of the title Honorary Marine is not to be
considered lightly and should not be used as a means of just
saying thank you, as a group award, or in recognition of
official/paid duties.
(3) There are other forms of recognition that allow the
Marine Corps to maintain the integrity of the title Honorary Marine,
while also providing appropriate recognition for significant effort
that benefits the Marine Corps.
(a) Public Service awards are available in recognition
of an individual’s service. These nominations should be made directly
to the staffing agency prescribed in reference (a).
(b) For certain groups or individuals who have provided
one-time contributions to the Corps, letters of appreciation by CMC
are available.
(c) Commanders who desire to recognize civilian employees
who perform extraordinary service for the Marine Corps are encouraged
to pursue appropriate civilian recognition awards as prescribed in
reference (b).
5. Administration and Logistics
a. Commanders will use this policy to nominate individuals
deserving of the title Honorary Marine or who deserve official
recognition. Submissions may be made in standard Naval letter
format with forwarding endorsements from the chain of command,
including their major subordinate commands.
b. Individuals designated as an Honorary Marine or who receive
other official recognition will be informed that this recognition
carries no entitlement to pay or benefits.
