    V-22 Osprey

Good Afternoon Marines, I was wondering if I could get your opinion on something. What does the V-22 Osprey primarily do? Is it used more for transporting things, or for carrying Marines to the battle? I know they have different functions, but how does in compare to the AH-1W Super Cobra? The reason I ask is I need to do a report on what MOS I would want to go in to if I can become a Marine. Thank you for your time,

    Parsons95

Cobras are attack helos, they are designed to blow stuff up. The V-22 is a transport. It can carry Marines or supplies with equal ability.

    Thank you Corporal!

cobras are hand in hand with hueys Uh-1 (new version is out, though)--the hueys provide support, while the V-22 is taking the place of the phrog (CH-46). The CH-56 is the sea stallion and is the "work horse" of the Marine Corps being able to lift and transport huge equipment. The V-22's main purpose is still being decided, but it is a cargo and transport aircraft mainly. Because of it's speed, size, and the height at which it flies, it is thought to be safer than the phrog and more practical. Go to military .com for more info on the Osprey, they had a really good documentary on it earlier.

The V-22 is replacing the CH-46, research both and you will have your answer.

Parsons - think you would be interested http://vernicearmour.com/vernice-armour.htm

This chick here amazed the hell outta me when I first saw her on a documentary on PBS. She's a member of the WMA too but, I haven't had a chance to meet her yet, maybe next reunion.

V-22's put out one hell of a downwash for those of us hooking stuff up underneath it. Worse then the CH-53's. Its like standing in a category 5 hurricane. V-22's are mainly used for troops, but can carry cargo if needed. I refer to them as Medium lifts and something like the CH-53 as a Heavy Lift.

I've never flown in one, and don't know the in's and outs as far as safety and what not, but from what i've seen Ospreys are pretty amazing machines. Fast, agile, and can put on quite a show. Especially at night if they have their blade tip lights on. Huge green circles flying around.I'm not sure they'd be a good gunship or anything like the Cobra, but they do fly faster.

I flew in an Osprey to KV...freaking hated it. The whole time we went from taking off to flying straight, I kept thinking "If those rotors dont tilt at the same time, cancel Christmas"

I've been in a 53 as well. To compare them I'd have to say I didnt get soaked with oil and I could actually breath fresh air on the Osprey. They were still both the worst aircraft ive ever been in, I guess im just not a helo guy. The osprey was fast as **** though.

The Osprey is not an attack aircraft at all, neither is the 53 however I have seen 53's flying over here with the rear door open and a gunner out the back.

Usually a 53 will be escorted by a cobra.

A door gunner can **** some stuff up, sure, but those are really for defense. We've even been on 46s with guns mounted on the windows. Oddly enough, they were only set up like that in training, not in country...?

What's the best MOS you could choose to be able to fly in one of these?

If you don't mind being cargo and being treated like ****, go 03! We spent a month getting used and abused in Yuma (go, WTI!) Then again, some grunts never see the inside of a helo..

On the contract.... "AG" that's what I signed for. Flight Mechanic/ Crew chief. The problem is you don't get to choose what aircraft so you might also be put on KC-130s.

    6030- KC-130 flight mechanic
6032- KC-130 flight engineer (not sure this falls under the same contract though)
    6168- Helicopter Crew Chief
    6172- CH-46
    6173- CH-53
    6174- UH-1N
    6176- MV-22

My son works on the MV-22 Avionics. He said this is one bad azz aircraft. I love the aircraft and have watched it's development since I was in the Corps. He said they are installling a new weapons system now for the pilots. I have been reading alot of issues with the nacelles and fire issues with some type of blower failure. I guess this is only with the A series and not the B that the Marines fly. But if I had to fly in and out of a hot LZ I am getting on the Osprey! Speed, speed, speed!

I have the AG Enlisted Aircrew contract too, but I don't have exactly the same MOS's. Maybe because yours is "flight mechanic/cc" and mine is just "enlisted aircrew"? But they're both AG... who knows.

All I know is that there are 6 MOS's in my field, don't remember the numbers:

    7-something: C130 Loadmaster
    63-something: C130 Crew Chief (CC)
    6172: CH-46 CC
    6173: CH-53E CC
    6174: UH-1N CC
    6176: MV-22 CC

That, with the exception of knowing the MOS-numbers, is exactly what is on my contract and what was in the recruiter's binder page under "AG - Enlisted Aircrew". I didn't have your mechanical option...
