Mike, like the others have said, and I will repeat, you may, under regulations, wear your uniform as long as you wear it correctly.

As far as the kids wearing blues, or parts of blues, an earlier poster was basically correct, as long as they are not "impersonating" a military member, they can get away with it. A US Supreme court decision back in 1972 said they can wear parts of a uniform for basically any reason as long as they are not claiming to be in the military.

Sucks, but that's the way it is.

I'm sorry ,my mistake.I remember being told you had to earn the right to wear the uniform and I was stupid enough to believe it.

1st of all, you're not stupid, quit saying that.

you do have to earn the right to wear the uniform...with meaning.

This is a free country. You can pretty much do as you please as long as you're not infringing on the freedom of others.

Yeah you can do to the surplus store or ebay and buy some military uniforms and wear it, but will it mean anything?

But the day you graduate from boot camp or OCS or whatever you plan on doing, and you put on that uniform, and your instructor calls you "Marine", it will truly mean something.

Thats the meaning of "earning the right to wear the uniform"

    I hope I made sense.

Bingo. And watch the sarcasm, John. I understand what you were meaning, but that comment could be taken several ways. "Tone" doesn't always come through in typing.

Question, I was told by my recruiter not to mount my army ribbons for the ball. I am just wondering if its his opinion that I will just get ridiculed for them or if its just better not to include them with the Corps ribbons, and its just 2 which aren't medals so they would go on the right with my Marine ones, NUC, SSD, and thats it

I think we've established that if your uniform fits, you're squared away, it's clean, you have a nice high and tight, shoes polished, brass shined, wearing the uniform you've earned the right to wear is your right.

I don't understand the recruiters thinking however. If you've earned military ribbons in another service, I can't figure why it would be wrong to mix those with the ones earned as a Marine. It's not like you have a chest full like Audy Murphy or Chesty Puller. For example: If you were awarded the Silver Star in the Army, then you joined the Marines, I thought there was protocol to display that/those ribbons on your current uniform, in the proper sequence of course, from the highest to the lowest.

Someone with a lot more time in than me would have to answer that. I thought I saw a Capt and a Lt as members here. . .

I recall seeing many veterans wearing their uniforms, ribbons and such for parades, balls, dances, I don't know why you should be any different.

But this is based on the fact that you're talking to a grunt that spent less than four years in the Corps, and was quite possibly the biggest _ _ _ _ bird the United States Marines ever encountered. . .

Get cleaned up, wear the uniform with pride, and don't do anything in it to disrespect it. The Frug's Ok, but don't be doing the worm or the alligator in it. . .

Thank you Sir, much appreciated, I was just wondering, since being a Cpl. I do rate 11 medals and four ribbons, I will probably look a little funny compared to the career pogues at the ball. But I guess I will take it up with him soon and find out exactly why. Have a good one Alpha1

There is a current edition of Lowrider Magazine (Military Edition) that features, as would be expected, quite a few modified cars and bikes designed, built and owned by military personnel or civililians that were in the military. What caught my attention though was that one of the foxy models was wearing a Lance Corporal decorated Marine blouse opened to the naval.
I don't know what I looked at first, the foxy, bountiful woman with a attractive and quite viewable bustline or the Marine Corps blouse that she was wearing.
As much as I personally would prefer Marine Corps attire to be worn only by Marine Corps personnel this model made a very good argument for wearing the blouse even though not a Marine.

    Mikewebe:

The reason you can't wear army decorations (some of them) is because the Marine Corps doesn't recognize them.

Things like the Army Service Ribbon, Professional Development Ribbon, etc, because they have no USMC counterpart, are not allowed for wear on USMC uniforms.

Don't ask me why, but it's a Marine Corps thing LOL.

Any other army ribbons you earned/rate, you likely can wear. Let me know if you have any questions on those.
