The True Grit of a Marine

I don't know if I ever discussed this here, but many of you may have heard or read about it.

Back in early March of this year, my unit was involved in a horrible bus accident in South Alabama as we were coming home from a field exercise. My good friend Lance Corporal David Miles, who went to boot camp with me and also attended the same college as me, was killed. Several were critically injured, including one who suffered paralysis from the waist down.

Well that Marine's mother drove him all the way out to the field last month to see us. I have to say, I was humbled by the experience. He's in his early 20's, with a lot of life ahead of him. He was all smiles, raving about how he was training to enter the wheel chair olympics. He was also joking about his new 4WD wheelchair that can climb stairs. He also said he wanted to walk again before his contract was up so he could get back in the grind.

That's what it's all about, folks.
