Checkers hmm. I went to the Barbershop the other day to get my weekly haircut. The two old men were, as usual, playing checkers and gossipping with the Barber. you can learn so many things from these guys, but on this day Leroy was to learn so much more! I had been working out in the yard wearing a tank top when I decided to go get my hair cut. Picture this I have seen these old coots playing checkers in front of the Barber shop for a number of years but have never spoken to them because I always thought thet were grouchy old farts and they are. I have an unusually large tattoo on my shoulder of Chesty bearing the letters USMC that I usually keep covered with shirt sleeves. As I walked by these two old checker players who were cussing and carrying on seemingly having a good old time they fell unusually quiet and stared at me for some time. While I was getting my horseshoe trimmed up they were in the corner mumbling back and forth. After the barber finished I payed and was walking out, They stopped me and started quizzing me on the tattoo, come to find out that both of these "OLD COOTS" were Marine veterans of the Island hopping campaign of WWII. One of them knew John Basilone on a personal level. Four hous later I got in my pick-up headed for home with tears of joy. From now on part of my weekly routine is to stop get a hair-cut and a conversation with thes two "SALTS"..
