Thumbs up Yomp, it's a Bootneck thing

The members of Once a Marine, always a Marine http://civviestreet.proboards19.com/index.cgi#general will be yomping around parts of Dartmoor on the 26th and 27th of September. The event is in aid of our recently injured comrades from Iraq and Afghanistan who now find themselves reliant on a failing governmental infrastructure.
We aim to show them that 'Royal' exists outside the Corps and there is a future despite the appalling injuries they have suffered. Members of St Dunstan's, ( http://www.st-dunstans.org.uk/ )a charity for blind former servicemen and women will also be attending, they like the way we party.
Various members are collecting for the Help For Heroes Campaign http://www.helpforheroes.org.uk/ . Money collected is going towards a new swimming pool facility at Headley Court; enabling our injured servicemen and women to recuperate without the objections they have recently endured from some sectors of the local civilian population.

This page belongs to Oonagh Reffell who is organising the Yomp alongside her husband Bernie.

If you can be at the Plume of Feathers, Princetown (Ploom of Doom), then be there. I promise you will not regret it.

I meant to add, Jim Schmidt is sending us a copy of his poem signed by the bard. It will be auctioned at the Plume.

    Thanks in advance Jim.

Silly me, I was alluding to the flag.
Was informed it had been relieved of duty by some toe-rag.

    Hi Sparkie,
    It's English you know.
Meaning: rascal, mischievous, sometimes, but not always, malicious.
Not entirely sure of the spelling as it's more slang than 'proper' English.
Might even come from Cockney rhyming slang; will look into it seeing as it's you.
Be safe in those sand hills.

Just checked it out for you:
It's London slang meaning vagrant but now more commonly used as I have stated.
    Take care Sparkie.

    Rob Parry-
I seem to remember a movie titled "The Cockleshell Heros". What I don't seem to remember is if this movie (in black and white) was referring to the Royal Marines during World War II.
I guess I could look it up but it's always nice to find out from a "person in the know". All the best to you and your fellow Comrades in Arms and the event that you are all supporting and sponsoring.
    Adios from South Florida
    Gary

Ostogary, the Cockleshell Heroes refers to Operation Frankton, the canoe borne raid on the Gironde Estuary by the formative SBS, under command of Major Blondie Haslar. It's worth looking at the online coverage. The film showed what happened on the operation but starred various serving members of the Corps, one being Podge Overbury as the drill instructor. If you can find it as a DVD it's worth watching.
There is now a Franckton Trail, through France, the Pyrenees and Spain; it follows the escape route used by the surviving crew, Blondie Haslar and Bill Sparks. Bill died a couple of years ago, after the war he left the Corps and had anonymity as a bus driver in London.

Toe rag is a term which referred many years ago to the rags wrapped around peoples feet to keep them warm, when shoes were a matter for the gentry, not the unwashed lowlife. We now use it to mean a general member of the shallow end of the gene pool.
