Ed: I joined the Corps in 1951 just out of High School. After boot at MCRD I was stationed at El Toro in VMF 451. We shipped to Hawaii and reopened Kaneohe Bay on the windward side of Oahu as it had been closed for a while after WWII. 451 Flew U-birds - F4U Corsairs - you know the kind with the fan up front. Later went with VMA 251 to K6 in Korea. 251 Flew AD's. Those big boxy mean machines. Good to see that some old guys are still out there writing.

    Another Airwinger, VMFA-312

    Hi guys
Great to see some wingers here!!!

    I was with the Com/Nav shop W/C210-(MOS 6616)
VMFA-333 (TME for OJT, sometime in 1979, probably Feb to May)
    VMFAT-101 probably May 1978 to May 1980
VMFA-312 May 1980 to July 1981 (West pac to MCAS Iwakuni-DEC80-June81)

Got to go to Top Gun in September/October 1980 (doing maintance of course) with VMFA312 (Boy our aircrews got their as*es kicked by those guys)- It was great fun.

Definitely miss working on the old F-4s. After I got out, I got a degree in Electrical Engineering and worked for defense contractors on F-16 Inertial Navigation systems. Did about 6 years in defense work, but have gone on to the Automotive Industry.

    Semper Fi.

I don't have an Air MOS, but served most of my years with the Wings. HQ 1st MAW DaNang in 69-70, HQ MCAS Beaufort 70-71, HQ MAG32 Beaufort 71-73, and HQ 2nd MAW Cherry Point 74-75. Took a while, but I finally got where I never heard the jets flying over when I was sleeping. I worked at the comm center or message center.

Well, that explains it. You slept at work then.

One of the best jobs ever. Did a lot of air-refueling mission .. nothing like watching an F4 start taking on fuel load at such a slow air speed, those guys had their hands full.
