Allies push north toward Baghdad
Sgt. Jeff Seabaugh of Colorado Springs, Colo., from the 5th Marine Expeditionary Unit patrols an Iraqi naval base Sunday in Az Zubayar, in the southern Iraqi desert.
Two large American forces drove north on Sunday, one of them coming to within 100 miles of Baghdad as a two-pronged “pincer” assault on the Iraqi capital appeared to be taking shape following the valleys of the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. But as troops made their war north, Marines were heavily engaged in the southern city of Nasiriyah and military officials told NBC News that several Americans may have been taken prisoner by Iraqi forces. Earlier Sunday, a British warplane was mistakenly shot down by a Patriot missile battery.
