You don't have a choice other than to be involved. You will get your tan belt at boot camp and will train more as you go through school and get to the fleet.
Many bases have opportunities for you to train on your own time. Your unit may train often, or only as often as they have to. It is up to them. In addition, there are rank requirements for the belts.
Tan and Gray have no rank requirements. For Green you have to be at least a LCpl. For Brown you have to be at least a Cpl. And for Black you have to be at least a Sgt.

E4B is right on the money with his answer, but here is something to remember...Your primary responsibility to the Corps is learning and knowing your MOS...every tiny aspect of it to the most minute detail. Everything else is considered a secondary requirement and should not take personal precedence over your job or the mission.

I wish they had done stuff like that when I went through learning martial arts would have been cool.

All Mcmap will teach you in the first couple of belts is enough moves to get your ass handed to you at a bar fight in Oceanside. You don't learn "Counter to the Side-Pool Cue Whack" or "Counter to the Barstool over the Head" until you're a black belt.
