Not USMC air winger, but a former Field Radio Operator, and current aircraft technician for the airlines 20 years. (And surprisingly, most former Marines I work with had no USMC aviation. Most were grunts that went to school later on to become A&P mechanics.)

I didn't have an aviation MOS. I was a 3051 with a secondary of 0311. In 1965 I was the Warehouse Chief for MAG-16 at Danang Air Base. When the UH34D operating squadrons begin to lose so many Crew Chiefs and Aerial Gunners they were taking whatever MOS' they could get to replace the gunners with. I volunteered and flew window gunner for several months, and then extended my tour to fly as an Aerial Gunner with VMO-2 UH1E Gunships for several more months. I flew over 400 total missions, 126 of which were "combat" missions.

The name doesn't ring a bell with me, Chuck. I was with H&MS-16, MAG-16 up in MCAS Futenma before shoving off for Danang in May of '65. I don't think he was with the H&Ms-16(-), MAG-16(-) supply crew when I got down there. Maybe he was in Chu Lai, instead.

Yes Chu Lai... That was his nickname when I first met him many years ago...
