To answer your question fully it is the Mameluke sword, it was first presented to Lt Presley O'Bannon after battle of Derna. If I'm not mistaken I think it was during the First Barbary war.

Without googling it! Who was the first Commandant of the Marine Corps?

Just to back up, you all hit on one of my pet peeves. You all gave the "correct" answer about the blood stripe. However, the "rest of the story" is also interesting. Marines first ended up with red stripes on their trousers because they had run out of pants to issue. When they went to the Army to get pants, they had extra pants with the red stripe (artillery I believe- the different 'branches' of the Army have different colors), so that is what was given to the Marine Corps.

Funny you should ask, I just wrote a paper on this subject. Here it goes...

"To the Shores of Tripoli" (1805)
    "Fortitude" (1812)
"From the Halls of Montezuma to the Shores of Tripoli" (1848)
"By Sea and by Land" (1850's)
    "Semper Fidelis (1883)

Was it perhaps Lucy Brewer in the War of 1812? A book I just read mentioned that story, but I don't know if there was someone else who did something similar...

Although as a bit of bonus info, Hannah Snell revealed herself as a woman to fellow Royal Marines in a London pub in 1750. She had disguised herself as a male when she enlisted, sailed to India through great storms and fought in mud-filled trenches at the siege of Pondicherry.

So technically....she was the first female Marine
