    An Old Soldiers Birthday

Last evening, we celebrated the 89th Birthday of my wife's grandfather. Although he was not a Marine, he was an Army soldier who served in WWII. I have heard some of the bad stories of his action in Saipan and on Okinawa. But the best stories are of when he came down with dengue fever and spent many a night in different hospitals on a lot of small islands until he got to Hawaii. He still gets mad when he tells us about the story when the MPs threw him in jail for "talking smart". They were stopped on base for something or other and when they asked for their names, he replied "Joe Smith" and they said Ok wise guy off you go. I am amazed that the things this man has seen and done in his 89 years.

This man is one of a few remaining true unsung heroes of WWII.

Lets hear it for Joseph Douglas Smith!
