At Elliscraig: People fail to realize that when an aircraft goes up that it's mission is limited to the ordnance onboard, which may not be the correct type for the type of mission at hand. They are also hindered by some weather conditions even with all the high speed technology.
Artillery has every king of ordnance you could imagine on the deck and are 99% of the time with in range of grunts trying to kill the enemy. You may not always need a 500lb bomb. When an artillery batter gets a fire mission it is less than a minute before rounds are down range and usually a hell of a lot faster. One minute compared to maybe 5 minutes or an hour for an aircraft to get there is a hell of a lot better when the enemy is trying to stomp a mud hole in your ass and walk it dry.
Artillery is called the King Of Battle for a reason and it is more precise than one thinks.

Ok, now that someone has cleared that one up...
Kokesh is, in fact, a former Marine. He's a code pinkster dirtball, but NOT a poser.
As far as the airstrike vs arty...it really depends on what you have 'on call' and what you don't. If you've got your CAS waiting on your call, then it's likely quicker. If the battery (s) are within range (or your company mortars are, *even better*) then the tubes are faster.
This becomes an 'apples/oranges' point. Planes can't stay on 'hover' forever, they run out of fuel, for one thing. Arty can stay 'prepped' with pre-arranged coordinates.

We use traditional arty, XCAL, HIMARs, and whatever's on station for airflow. Plus birds RTB can deviate and provide support if time, fuel, munitions allow. I don't know if there is towed arty these days, everything that supports the unit I was attached to was stationary...plus we had a lot of airflow. MAW can sometimes be skiddish, and after a month or so of dropping GBUs left and right on one or two guys, Division gets a little concerned with the cost-benefit ratio and tells you to use arty if you can't get good battle damage assessments on your CAS drops.
