Wood, Stanley A. "Butch" Jr. MALTA Stanley Andrew Wood Jr., 63, of Malta, N.Y., passed away peacefully to be with his Lord Jesus Christ at approximately 6 p.m. on June 24, 2011. Born in Catskill, N.Y. on March 29, 1948, Stanley, known as "Butch" to his family and friends while growing up in Catskill, was the son of the late Marguerite McPherson and the late Stanley A. Wood Sr. and brother of the late Janet L. Wood. Stanley is survived by his loving wife, Bernadette (Mainville) Wood; four endearing children, Michelle Smith of South Glens Falls, Commander Robert Bryans of San Diego, Calif., James Bryans of Albany, and Christopher Bryans of Yorktown, Va; and ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his two aunts, Virginia Longthon of Albany and Joyce Copleston of Coxsackie; and several cousins. Over the years, Stanley was also a "big brother" to several young men. Demonstrating the gracious and selfless spirit that characterized his entire life, he mentored these young men and provided them with direction and the hope of a better life. Stanley attended Coxsackie-Athens High School, and like many of the unsung patriotic young men of his generation, left school early to join the service. He enlisted in the
United States Marine Corps in 1965, was assigned to H&S Company, 3rd Battalion 2nd Marines, 2nd Marine Division, based out of Camp Lejeune, N.C. He served two tours in Vietnam from 1967 to 1969, and made an at sea deployment to the Mediterranean Sea. While in the Marine Corps he received his high school diploma, a wide variety of technical and combat training, the National Defense and Good Conduct medals, and various Vietnam service and campaign medals. Following his honorable discharge from the Marine Corps in 1969, Stanley began what would be a 45-year career in the automotive industry. Starting out as a mechanic in a small garage in Albany, Stanley built an impressive resume that included master mechanic and numerous automotive management certifications, 16 years of mechanic and management experience at Armory Garage in Albany and, more recently, service manager at Checkered Flag Jaguar, Virginia Beach, Va. In addition to his interest in the automotive industry, Stanley enjoyed rifle and pistol shooting. He was a long time member of the National Rifle Association and he belonged to the SaraSpa Rod and Gun Club in Greenfield Center on Porters Corner Road. Stanley was also a member of American Legion Post 0070 and VFW Post 420. He also found great comfort and peace being a member of Saint Gregory the Great Catholic Church in Virginia Beach, Va., and Saint Clements Catholic Church in Saratoga. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 10 a.m. from St Clements Church. Calling hours are Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. at the Marra Funeral Home, 246 Remsen St., Cohoes. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made to VFW, 400 West 34th St., Kansas City, MO 64111 or Hospice Community of Saratoga, 179 Lawrence St., Saratoga Springs, NY 12866.
