I was there Dec 66 - June 69.
I drive by occasionally and look at the first barracks visible from the freeway and the memories are re-kindled.
We did our 3 mile runs along that chain link fence.
I wonder if you remember the club (ahem) called the Brass Rail just outside of west gate?
Carry on....

I was at MB PHILA from Jun 1967-Nov 1968 when I was discharged. Worked the brig twice. We were only permitted to work the brig at six month intervals.
We always talked about Herman the German during the midnight watch. Some guys claimed that they heard him during that watch.
Story was that he died there at the brig. Never saw any documentation backing that up.
I also worked the Gate. And was the Assistant NCOIC of Casual Company there. Worked with Sgt. Ellerbee. Still in contact by email with him. He became the Head Coach at Simon Gratz High School in Phila. Was also an assistant coach at Temple U. before retiring. Great guy to work for as was Sgt Platt.
Spent a lot of time at Tun Tavern II. Had a lot of good times at MB Phila

I left MB Phila in Nov '68. I finished up working in the Brig. Did we work together there? Everyone called me Cpl. Pizza because they couldnt pronounce my last name. I cant remember if Gunny Hook was still there when I was discharged. He was in charge of Escort. I knew a lot of guys in Escort. The one that I always remembered was Smokey Taylor.

I was not a drinker. I had a girl friend in Haddonfield NJ and went to see her when I was not on Escort. I lived in Mayfair NorthEast Philly. My Father dropped me off at the west gate one night. I said it was a long walk to the Barracks. I made himdrive me around to the front gate. On togetherweservered you will see pictures of the main gate, I copied from leatherneck mag.

Do you remember SGT Wright of the Escort section. He and another would go to TUN Tavern. Beat up 20 sailors. Had Captains Mast at the Navy Captains home up the street. The Capt would as the sailors what happened. They said 2 Marines beat up 20 Sailors. The Navy Captain was so embarased, he dismissed the whole thing.
Or at least that is what I heard.

There were a couple of guys named Wright when I was there. I dont remember them as being the NCOIC of Escort. I remember an old Gunny who had lost on hand and wore a hook in place of his hand. He eventually proved that he was able to do everything required of him with the hook, so he was able to stay in. That is why we called him Gunny Hook.
I have heard the story of two Sgt's taking on twenty sailors, but I dont think there were ever twenty sailors in TT II except for WAVES. They nurses were always welcome, especially the one we called MoScoosh(?)

Do you have a regular email address?
Remember when you were on night watch in the Escort Office. Girls would call and talk to you all night. I do not know if any of the guys met up with them.

When the USS Saratgo and when the USS Enterprize came in to be refitted there were a lot Sailors around. I used to drive around in my 1968 Buick Skylark and splash rain water on their White Uniforms.
I remember running to Blind Mans every day for lunch. Each guy gave me enough money to buy lunch for myself. In the 23 months I was stationed at the Yard, I only ate in the messhall once or twice.

Matt, I live in Hammonton and I work nights, so this weekend I will give you a call. One Sgt did meet up with one of the girls. She was about 300lbs, but he liked them big. I forgot all about Blindman's!
Maybe you remember my car; it was a '67 Dodge RT, bronze. Before that I had a white '63 Galaxie. One of the guys in Escort used to have a '67 gold Mustang that he would lend out when he was on an escort. His name was (i think) Smokie Taylor. Forgot where he was from.
