On August 13th, 1918, women enlist in the United States Marine Corps for the first time.

Opha Mae Johnson is the first woman to enlist.

In those days women were allowed to enlist but were not allowed to serve in war zones.

They were only allowed to be a secretary or cook.

It would not be until the 1940s that female Marines were allowed to serve in a combat area.
