    Advice please!

    Hello Marines,

I was hoping to get a little advice. Here's my story. Im 28 years old and my pre screening paper work got approved to go up to MEPS which im planning on doing this week. My question to you is that I'm feeling a little apprehensive about recruit training, especially at my age. I have a wife and 3 month old and wouldn't be leaving for MCRD san Diego until next July. What advice can you give me to get over nerves and or am I making the right choice especially at my age if I'm feeling this. Is it pretty normal to feel nervous? I would be going into the reserves and these are the MOS jobs I qualified for as a FYI:

1142-electric equipment specialist. 1171-hygiene operator.1345- engineer equipment operator. 1371- combat engineer. 3531- Motor Vehicle operator.

Any recommendations you would suggest as a MOS?

Thank you all for your time and advice!

First. Being nervous about 13 weeks of USMC bootcamp is natural. If you weren't apprehensive about the challenge, then that would be a legitimate concern.

You'll definitely be the "grandpa" of the platoon. Expect to be called that by your DI's. The Marine Corps, and bootcamp in particular, are young studs games. I went a year after highschool. Number one target for recruiters is highschool seniors. Personally, I would not be interested at 28. But, it has been done. Average age of a DI today is 26. Once you enlist, and join your DEP, you will be involved with organized PT ran by your recruiters. You'll get a good idea then what kind of physical shape you're in, and what areas you need to improve in before shipping next July.

As far as MOS. You'll be contracted to fill an open position at your nearest reserve unit. Sounds like it is a Combat Engineer company? Most will recommend a MOS you can translate to a civilian job in your area. That would eliminate 1171 - water purification.

    Good luck.
