    Today in History....

    Today in Marine Corps History: 1945 - Marine MajGen Roy S. Geiger assumed command of the 10th U.S. Army on Okinawa. http://bit.ly/1ULDNl8

    He replaced gen Buckner USA in Okinawa after Buckner died and only Marine to command an army.

    That's pretty cool info. Id forgotten that about Gen Gieger. Wonder how the soldiers reacted to a Marine CO?

    Nice thread but we have a " Today In History " section on the home page under Facebook and above the Marine Corps Birthday countdown. Perhaps you can add history info there.

    At the risk of seeming forward, General Geiger was the first Marine officer to command an Army (the 10th Army), not a division. Also, he only lasted a few days before the US Army flew in a replacement. The Smith v. Smith incident on Saipan still seriously rankled with the US Army and they weren't going to let a Marine occupy an Army general officer's position for any length of time.

    Still, Geiger hit the history books even if for just a few days.

    Lt. General Krulak mentions this in his book, First to Fight. Like Zulu mentioned, the Army broke some records flying Gen. Joseph Stillwell out quick, fast, and in a hurry from the US since they couldn't stand for the world to see a Marine in charge of a field army.
