    Enlistment Questions

    Hello Marines,
I am not a poolee yet but I have begun my enlistment process and went to MEPs on Friday. However, I was temporarily disqualified for Alopecia and have to have a consult then I'll be able to swear in. But I have a couple of questions that I was hoping to get some help on.

I am hoping to get the MOS 4421 Legal Service Specialist and then go to law school and eventually become a JAG. So I was wondering assuming my enlistment goes as planned, how does college work during my enlistment.
Is there a way for me to go to college full time to get my bach and then law school?
Will the Marine Corps pay for me to get my bach in pre-law and then go to law school?
How does law school work with the Marine Corps?
What are the chances of me making it as a JAG, assuming I pass the BAR?

Sorry for the lengthy post. I am just trying to figure out about how college will work for me.

    Thank You Marine in advance.

Yes you can go to college while being enlisted, odds that you would do a full time class load though is very low. Tuition assistance and the GI bill will pay for a majority of schooling you will go to.

In order to become a JAG officer you will have to earn a commission as an officer and then proceed to law school after that point. In order to become an officer you would have to graduate from college and graduate from Officer Candidate School.

Thank You. I should be able to finish my bachelors though in my first four years as I will gradaute high school with 30+ college credits. So assuming I do get threw OCS and become an LT, would the Marine Corps send me to Law School full time?

I doubt it as the Marine Corps does not pay for a graduate degree. There are programs for those that are already officers, but I am not sure how that would work out for JAG. It is good to have a plan, but focus on one step at a time. And if you are enlisting for the legal and administration option, then I will be willing to put money on you getting the MOS 7041: Aviation Operations Specialist. That is exactly what happened to me. At first I was upset about it, but once I got to the fleet, I found it to be a great job for me.

Thanks I guess all I can do is wait and see how it goes assuming I make it through boot. How is MOS 7041: Aviation Operations Specialist related to legal services?

I went to law school with an active duty SSgt stationed at Henderson Hall. The Corps was paying for law school.

Obviously he had his bachelor’s degree since he was in law school, but he remained enlisted versus OCS because he said his duties as a junior officer would have prevented him from going to law school as easily as an enlisted man.

He is now with the DOJ as an attorney.

You can do just about whatever you wish as a Marine. As the Marine stated above, unless you stroke the players, you will most likely not be able to swing full undergrad studies while on active duty. I also knew a soldier that received his BS degree from Phoenix U while on active duty. He was also in law school with the SSgt and me.

    I hope this helps.

First off, dont assume anything. You WILL make it through boot camp. That is the mindset you need to be in. If you start thinking 'if I graduate', or 'assuming I graduate', then you are setting yourself up for failure. Aviation ops is not related to legal services, but they are both an administrative MOS. If you look closely at the paper showing each OccField and look under option CB- Legal and Admin... you will see what MOS falls under that category. You will see an MOS 7000-Airfield services. That includes the MOS 7041 (ops) and 7051 (ATC). Like I said, don't get upset if you get to MCT and they tell you that you are going to be an MOS other than 4400, because you don't select the MOS, you select the OccField. You may get lucky, but too many young Marines get a negative attitude towards the Marine Corps because they feel that they got 'screwed' out of what they wanted because they don't know how to read their contracts. Always look at the positive, and you will go far.

bdchi- Thank you so much that information really did help. I am really wanting to make it threw law school, but I have a lot of stuff to do befor that comes. Thank you for the insight though, and I like to hear of others that have done it.

Shu-Yes Sir I WILL make it through boot camp, I said assume because I am still waiting on some medical stuff to clear. The MOS information was very useful and I understand that I only select a field of not an actuall MOS...

Thank you all Marines for your responses and I have to wait a month befor I can go back to MEP's. But I will keep you Marines updated as I progress on my journey.

Good! Please do. The information provided is from those who've 'been there', and probably better than you'll get from any other source.

Don't lose heart. Legal Services Specialist job is not all you might think it is....lots of wills, probates, etc etc.

    Yes Sir!
I am definitely NOT losing heart, but as I wait for my medical clearance to be finalized my parents are playing 100 questions about what my plans are, how I'm doing college, and all those questions so I wanted some advice.

Thanks Again to all Marines that repsoneded!!!

    Hello Marines,
It has been awhile since I have given an update on my enlistment process. I am still waiting for my consult date to clear my alopecia.

However, I was overweight at MEP's and that is obviously a problem. My BMI is 20% so I am struggling to get down to weight. I am currently 5'8" at 173lbs and need to be at 169lbs.

I currently run 6-9 miles 3 days a week and do inteval training 2 days a week, taking Saturday and Sunday off. There is no soda, fried food, chips, etc in my diet.

So my question is do any Marines have any suggestions on how to get down to weight. I DONT have fat to lose.

Thank You again to all Marines that take the time to answer my question.
