Good afternoon Marines,
I've been talking to my parents about my desire to DEP in three months when I turn 17 and so far I've had some mixed responses. My mom says she wants me to go to college and every time I bring up the subject of enlisting and how she has to sign for me she always gets angry and tells me to drop the subject.Every time I ask her if she'd sign she says she'd have to think about it and leaves it at that.

Whenever I talk to my Dad about it he just says I should join the Navy because it's better for careers, safer, blah, blah, blah.I'm sure he'll sign for me but he seems to dislike the fact that I want to join the USMC.My question is how can I go about telling my parents that this is what I want to do with my life and that I'm set on it? Especially with trying to convince my mom to get on board with the idea.I'd hate to have to wait til after my HS graduation to enlist. Thanks in advance for the replies! :flag:

"My question is how can I go about telling my parents that this is what I want to do with my life and that I'm set on it? Especially with trying to convince my mom to get on board with the idea"

Well two completely different issues.

#1 "Mom and Dad I want to serve my country and join the Corps. I have thought this out and this is what I want. With your signature I will join when I am 17. Without it I will join when I am 18. Either way I am joining."

See how easy that one was?

#2 is really your Moms (and Dads) issue. They have no obligation to want something or to go along with something just because you want it. Parents have rights also.

They also should not have to buy in on any of their kids enlisting during a time of war. Joining is an adults decision. Yours. Not theirs.

Give them the literature. Encourage them to talk to a recruiter. But do not badger them like some 6 year old wanting to open a present you were told not to open.

Parents have every right to think what they want and do what they want.

Just as you will when you turn 18.
