HMS Victory! Admiral Lord Nelson's Flag ship at Trafalgar.Now preserved and still in commision HM Dockyard Portsmouth.I did serve aboard the Victory (no I wasn't at Trafalgar) I was in the Royal Marine detachment showing visitors around the Ship.

Excuse my ignorance buy what does Three Badge refer to. I know long ago they use to give extra pay for GCB's but I believe that has stopped.

The term 3badgemarine refers to long service stripes (hash marks) one stripe for every 4 years service with 3 stripes the ultimate one can achieve,the three badge Marine was usually a long service 'Bootneck' with no ambition of promotion but was relied on for his experience within the various units.Has a 3badgemarine I did go on to serve for 25 years.Aye JR

Yes 3 badge my ambition was to be a 3 badge Marine but when I got married, at age 25, I thought I'd better switch on, earn extra dosh and buy a house for my 3 kids.
HMS Victory was a cushy draft which I was unable to attain; I did go onboard though when a mate was on gangway duty; can't remember his name but he was an 'old soldier' from 40 Cdo RM.

Here she is in the heart of the ancient dockyard at Portsmouth. If you look closely at the Mizzen truck you will see JR clinging steadfastly to his rum ration and refusing to come down until he is ready.

I know it has nothing to do with this thread but a number of years ago I bought, at a charity auction, a print of the Battle of Trafalgar with the Victory smack dab in the middle. The print was signed by the great-grandson of Lord Nelson. Probably no one else is impressed but I was, besides it was for charity.

Man, we sure have taken the pretty out of shipbuilding these days. I say go back to the days where weapons were works of art...but I guess that's easier to do with metal swords and wooden ships than armor and polymers.
