View Full Version : What is your goal IST before you ship out?

USMC Sokol

It's good to set a goal and try to reach it (or exceed it) before going to RT. So, I'm curious as to everyone's goal IST is before they ship out to their MCRD!

Current IST
Pull Ups: 17
Crunches: 101
1.5 Run: 13:12 (need to improve it big time)

Goal IST
Pull Ups: 22+
Crunches: 120+
1.5 Run: Under 12:00

I've been working out on my so far, but since my first IST I've improved A LOT! I may go and try the P90X work out since I've heard so many good things about it. I hope it works!

My current is in my signature.

My goal (and the last chance I get is early December) is sub-9:00 run ( I will be running next to someone who has an 8:50 and ships with me, coincidentally), 12+ pullups (I hit 10 on my own recently) and 80+ crunches.

Best of luck to everyone in attaining their ideal!

I definitely agree with you about setting goals before boot camp. By the way when we get out of boot camp we will be doing the PFT which has a 3 mile run rather than the mile and a half.

My Current IST:

Pull Ups: 20
Crunches: 128
1 1/2 Mile Run: 10:15

My Goal IST

Pull Ups: 100
Crunches: 150
1 1/2 Mile Run: 8:00

Some good advice I got lately was: Don't cut yourself short. You should always strive to be the best.

My goal is rather a PFT then a IST.

20+ Pull ups
100+ Crunches
20:00 or so 3 mile.

Yeah same here. I don't have that much time until I ship so I am focusing more on the three mile run rather than the mile and a half.

20 pull ups
100 sit ups
under 9 min 1.5 mi

Just need to work on my sit ups got the other two already. But I'm not to worried about those. They are the easiest to improve.

I would have included PFT, however just the thought of running 3 miles wears me out ^_^

i started at 5 pull ups, exactly 100 crunches, and an 11:04 run time. now i'm doing 8 pull ups (got there late, did them after PT), 107 crunches, and running a 10:30. I want to get a sub-ten run time, 20 pull ups, and i don't really care about the crunches as long as i keep practicing and getting over 100.

Our recruiter gave us some advice that seems to make sense; When prioritizing working out, put pullups and crunches first, before running. When doing the PFT if you max out on pull ups and crunches. you only need 25 points to get a 1st class. That means you can run it in like 25:30 (if I'm doing math correctl) and still have a first class PFT.

Now by no means am I saying slack (or saying my recruiter told us to slack, for that matter), but Mulls that extra 30 seconds is no where near as important as the extra 12 pull ups you need. I'd hit up every pull up program out there in order to get those 60 points you don't have. Keep pushin and pullin bro:banana:

Got a PM from a Marine suggesting these be put up. Good idea. Here's a way to score your run times, etc, to figure out where your at. I've set a goal for about 250, so whatever combination gets me there, I'm fine with. Anyway, here you go.

Realistically, I'd like to get my run under 11:00, of course eventually getting a 18:00 3 mile. My secondary goals are to get the last 5 pullups and 15 situps I need to max those areas.

Jensen139
11-23-09, 03:39 PM
Don't want to rain on your parade trmptplyr. Running an 18 min 3 mi is a goal we all should strive for. But if you want to run close to an 18 min 3 mi in boot camp you will need to be a lot closer to 9 minutes on your IST. Even then to be able to keep that pace for another 1.5 mi would be hard.
Concentrate on interval running 200's, 400's and 800's on some days. 1 mi repeats at max effort then rest about the same amount of time (or till you feel fully recovered) and repeat 1 or 2 more times on another day. Then one conditioning run per week 4-5 mi. If you did those three things M,W,F you'd see a lot of improvement in your run times. If your already doing something similar to that's great and continue on. I see that a lot of poolee's just run 4-5 or even more times for week at longer distances and that is not the best way to train.

I hate to tell you but the record number of pull ups done by a Marine is well over 100. In fact the depot pull up record is set at 131. The record was set by PFC Collin Bell.

I think everyones goal by the PFT test in RT would be 20 pullups 100 crunches and 18 minute three mile. My goal is to be on my way there by the time I take the original IST in RT. I am thinking 12-15 pullups, 80-100 crunches, 9:30 mile and a half. I have been steadily improving and have a pool function today so I hope I have gotten better since my last IST.

Not quite, I only have 'til February 8th. I'm going to go back and be an assistant coach with my old high school wrestling team over the holidays; it's the best conditioning I know (the drop out rate for our team in the 1st month every season was around 50% every year).

I'll also be running ISTs and PFTs with a friend who's trying to start the PLC before he leaves college. Between those two I'm hoping to have at least a 225 PFT before I ship. Shooting for the 300 by the end of boot.

off topic: Hey, I'm shipping out to SD the same day as you and I too am under an infantry contract.

on topic: My run times have consistently been around 12 minutes. I surprisingly can do around 70 crunches even with a pot belly. My pull ups aren't too great however. On good days I've done 5 pull ups but usually I would hit 3.

With my ship date around three weeks away, I believe I can shave off around thirty seconds from my run. I believe my crunches are fine but I should really start training them daily. My main worry is the amount of pull ups I can do. I've seen the pull up program thread and hopefully I'll consistently do 4 or 5 pull ups consistently.

See you there, and as for your pullups, take a few days off, and do nothing but pushups. Maybe you need to use the restroom---push for it, max set. Maybe you need some water---push for it. Any time you need to do something, want something, or are going somewhere, push for it. Try for 200+ in one day. Maybe 3 days of this, take a day off entirely, then hit the pullup bar, then see if you can crank out 7+ :D This will work.

My advice for pullups is get a weighted vest and a home pull-up bar that goes over the door. I started doing 3 sets of chin-ups 3 sets of pullups and 3 sets of nuetral grip pullups every other day with a 20 lb vest and went from 15-16 max to 25 in a set consistantly i've since moved onto a 45lb vest and can't wait to take the ist when i get home. The vest is also great for pushups, running and situps(though its more comfortable to take it off and lay in on your chest) but i've more then doubled my pushups and situps and i haven't run a 1.5 in a while but i have been running a 3 mile every other day with ankle weights and the vest so im hoping the results are good.

I go Monday so what I've got is what it's going to be:

3mi: 24:19 (cut it 1:40 from one day to the next!! :))

I'd like my crunches to be over 100, and I'd like my mile and a half run time to be under 9 minutes. I'll get there in three months! I only need an additional 38 crunches and 2 minutes and 28 seconds off of my mile and a half run time.

So, yesterday we had an IST. We always have an IST the first Saturday of each month, but for some reason they made us do an IST yesterday instead of PT...I wasn't ready for it AT ALL. I worked out like crazy the whole week and didn't give my muscles any rest.

Anyway, I did do good on my pull ups
Slowly, but surely, getting to my goal

I run an IST tomorrow at the Metrodome. The last time I ran it I had 70 second flexed arm hang, 81 crunches and a 13.33 mile and a half, with pretty bad shin splints. I dropped $140 on running shoes last night I hope will help. I ship 20100322, little less than a month so a realistic IST for me when I get to PI would still be a 70 second arm hang, 100 crunches+ and I hope to drop my 1.5 mile to around 11 minutes. We'll see if the shin splints get any better though!

My current IST(administered by myself and people at my gym) is:
16 pullups
98 crunches
1.5 mile in 11:07

goal IST:
30 pullups
150 crunches
17:00 3 mile

I leave in september, so hopefully I'll be at my goal by then. I've improved quite a bit since I entered the DEP. In december I was at 6 pullups, 71 crunches, and an 11:14 1.5 mile. I haven't done much running lately due to knee problems, but I've having that looked at by my doc and hopefully I'll be able to start running again very soon.

We just had our once annual pool function for RS Fort Worth at the JRB in Ft. Worth. My new IST stats are in my signature. Pull ups stayed the same, but crunches and run time improved a lot!

Anyways it was a long ass day Friday night / Saturday morning. It was cold as balls in the morning, but by the time the sun came up that changed quick, now everyone is sunburned. Much thanks to the Drill Instructors and the other Marines who came out to help out us Poolees.

Also, as I'm typing this I'm eating my peanut M&M's from my MRE from breakfast yesterday. ;]

IF... I get to stay until my shipdate, my goal is..

40 Pullups, 150 crunches, and 17 minute 3 mile run (and a low 8 minute 1.5 mile)

I'm planning on setting up some obstacles based on what people have told me and what I have seen with an emphasis on the rope areas. I am not only focusing on the PFT, but also trying to get good practice for the Confidence Course, etc..

Right now, to me, insight knowledge is key. Knowing what to expect so I can train accordingly will help tremendously. I'm trying to learn how to use my stomach when I talk so I have a voice at the end of the first day at SDRD (don't know how  all i do is tense my abs when I try lol). Also, trying to get bearing because I hear DI's are pretty damn funny.

Well our recruiters hold a pt session every thursday and we run a whole lot. i guess i just do long distances with sprints every now and then inbetween. Like i just sprint during my mile and half every now and then . WATER WATER WATER!! hydration is key to my endurance. Do some calistetics to work out your legs and build up muscle. hmmm really the key is motivation. if you really want it, you can achieve it. Always give your all and run till you puke.

Private Brown
04-08-10, 09:09 AM
What?

You have to work on your endurance as well as speed. It only makes sense that you would mix them. You should also mix hill runs in to your training routine as well. You do have to mix them in a logical way though.

My first poolee workout wasnt the best 8- Pull-ups, 87- Sit-ups and 11:13 1/2 mile!
On top of trying to improve ive been trying to put weight on as well. Im up to a 16 pull up max, 100+ sit ups and a similar run time. Ive gained approximately 20 pounds since my processing at MEPS. I leave very soon, and am torn between running more and lifting less. Im 6'4 and a half at 176lbs. I weighed in at MEPS 156lbs. I procrastinate when it comes to running as much, because i lose weight easy and have trouble gaining it. I have 1 month and i think im going to run as much as possible, disregarding weight loss. Push ups and pull ups are what ill rely on other than running.

After doing some research im reading that once i build more upper body, pull ups are more efficient than chinups which are mostly biceps PLEASE PLEASE do give me your opinions chinup vs pullup for max reps not necessarily best work out)

110+ crunches (again just the cushion)

20 min 3 mile. (running was never a strong suit. Also i figure if i get near this, when i do the actual PFT ill just really give it everything and i should be able to lower that)

this is as of 20100501. Ship date is 20101206, so i think its very doable.

9 Chin ups (palm facing me)

???

I do think that you have pull ups and chin ups confused. If your palms are facing you, that is a pull up.

Pull up beats chin up every time.

Check out the Armstrong pull up Workout if you haven't already. Made by a Marine. It doesn't get any better than that.

pull up is palm out and chinup is palm facing me correct? (this is what a general consesus via google has lead me to believe)

according too yourself however i have it wrong? (not that i care being wrong, I just want to make sure i do the more efficient one)

Private Brown

Yes, I am telling you that I believe you are wrong.

Palm in is more than likely going to be best for you. Just do alot of pullups and you will be able to determine for yourself.

I don't know about you, but I am getting 20 before boot camp whether it be pull up or chin up.

It does appear that I was wrong... I don't know where I got the idea, but it has been what I thought was a pull up and chin up for a # of years.

Thank you for clearing that up.

=) i came to the same conclusion but i figure its just a difference of terms so I didnt really care.

But then to clarify your previous statement. "Pull up beats chin up every time."

Could be redefined as Palm in beats palm out every time?

Private Brown

Indeed.

Palm in beats palm out every time.

I can do more palm facing out most of the time. palm facing out uses more of your back and lats and palm facing in uses more biceps from what I've found out. It just depends personally which muscle group is stronger on you. But in general more people can do more palm facing in.

Just took the IST yesterday at the state wide pool function and did okay, though by the time I go to recruit training in december. I plan on getting back into shape and my pullups to 20 and run time down under 9 for a perfect score.

It is more about form than anything else. Learn how to use the muscles associated to the pull up to there maximum efficiency without breaking the rules.
I immediately increased the number of pull ups I did when I learned how to use my back more effectively during a chin up.
What is the point in having muscles if you don't know how to use them?

I personally work on my pull-ups more than I do my chin-ups because it works a larger group of muscles. Before I leave I would love to run an IST with scores such as:

Pull-Ups: 21 reps
Crunches: 115
2400m Run: 9:45

It doesn't really make sense that chin ups are better than pull ups really, but it still (to me) seems to be the case.

this month's IST is in my signature. so far my goal is just to prepare more mentally. I know my general orders/rank structure/core values and various other USMC history, even some guidon movements.

but as for pullups, I always found that using a wide grip with palms out was best for me. less distance is traveled in the full range of motion (think about it..) and my back is already strong from powerlifting. it's all preference I guess, b/c I can't seem to do more chins than I can pullups.

Well thats the thing, I always found pullups to be easier. I started doing 0 of each, eventually working up to 1 pullup, then 2, 3, etc. Every ist i've taken i've managed to get 1 more than the last.
But I was never able to get 1 chinup. And im now up to 14 pullups on my last one. But I tried chin ups the other day, and managed 11. So I could probably do either one, but i've looked it up..and most sites say Pullups work more muscles than chinups. So i'll stick with pullups. (Palms facing towards me)

We have had this discussion. Palms facing you is chin ups.

Chin ups provide a lot more of a thing called leverage. Leverage is a very useful thing to have. I would venture to say that the reason some of you can't do chin ups is because your form is bad with them, and that the reason some of us can't do pull ups is because of form (again) and having a lot less leverage will make it harder. Then again the bigger muscles used during a pull up kind of evens it out I guess. I can't think of one or the other having a big advantage, but still hold to the fact that more people are good with chin ups.

Just get both methods up to 20 at least and your good to go. ;)

You guys do know its different muscles....right? lol seriously some people have just in their life or in their personal work outs, worked certain areas a lot more then others...

But at least you have the pull ups :P those usually take the longest to improve, since depending on how much fat you got on your stomach, abs seem to develop a lot faster in most people...
