ESCANABA - Richard A. Harteau, 77, of 111 North 12th Street, Escanaba, died Friday, Oct. 23, 2009, at the Pinecrest Medical Care Facility in Powers.

He was born on July, 11, 1932, (he and his siblings were the first surviving triplets born at St. Joseph Lloyd Hospital) in Menominee, and was the son of Walter and Mae (Pfankuch) Harteau. Richard attended school in Menominee and was a graduate of Menominee High School.

Following high school, he joined the Marine Corps and after completing his tour of duty reenlisted for two more years from 1952 to 1955.

Richard began his employment career as a police officer with the Menominee Police Department for eight years. He then became the chief service technician for Diebold Corporation retiring in 1988.

In 1957 Richard married the former Carol Jean Nylund and they shared their life together until 1965.

Richard was a member of the American Legion, was involved in the Foster Grandparent program, delivered "Meals on Wheels," and was a Friend of Bill W.

His hobbies included: hunting, fishing, golf, and drawing. Richard's favorite sports teams were the Dallas Cowboys and the New York Yankees. He was a wonderful poker player and enjoyed playing at the Chip-In Casino where his was referred to as the "Doyle Brunson" in the poker room.

Richard A. Harteau is survived by his best friend and life partner, Diane Lay of Escanaba; daughters, Carrie Jo Steinmetz of Prairie de Sac, Wis., Julie Desjarlais of Madison, Wis.; sons, Steven (Terri) Harteau of Wausau, Wis., Patrick Lay of Escanaba; brother, Carl (Joyce) Harteau of Felch; sisters, Marie (Richard) Palumbo of Lake Worth, Fla., Eldred Holm of Champagne, Ill.; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sons, Dean and George Anthony; and brothers, Raymond, George, and Robert.

A visitation will take place on Monday, Oct. 26 from 3 to 5 p.m. at the Anderson Funeral Home in Escanaba. Veteran's Memorial Service will be held at 3:30 p.m. in the Anderson Funeral Home Chapel.

Funeral services celebrating the life of Richard A. Harteau will follow at 5 p.m. with Father Rick Courier officiating.

Burial will be in the Cedar River Cemetery.
