My name is Michael James. I'm currently in the process of joining the Marine Corps. I head to MEPS Wednesday of this coming week for my ASVAB and processing. I was going for a job in the INTEL field, specifically 0231 Intelligence Specialist. My recruiter keeps trying to buff up RECON to me because of all the PT I enjoy doing, but I have heard to many stories about how difficult it is to get into BRC even after you pass the INDOC.

Now my question is, I was told that after your first term, you could possibly never get to reenlist. I was told that the Marine Corps like to keep its recruits at a young age. I was planning on reenlisting as Counter-Intelligence/HUMINT, but from what I was told it seems that wont be possible. Is there any truth to this?

Any information is much appreciated.

I'd Worry about Earning the Title First Young One.

Good advice. Get the initial enlistment off to a good start first.

After your first enlistment, if the Corps does not want you any longer, I suggest that you enlist in the Air Force. That is if you want the military as a career.

True. The Air Force likes taking on Marines. We know how to do things they don't, like march, salute, address officers as "Sir", shoot all kinds of guns, and a whole bunch of other neat stuff.

Reenlistment depends on if your MOS has any boat spaces available. If there are boat spaces (slots for you to fill) then you can reenlist. If not, you'll get the chance to lat move into a different field or separate from the Marine Corps.

If the Marine Corps only wanted young Marines, and didn't allow reenlistments, there would be no Gunnys, MSgts, Colonels, Generals, etc. Those Marines ain't young, and they didn't make that rank in 1 enlistment.

There are no guarantees.

And no one can say anything as to your re-enlistment since we can not see into the future. Who knows what MOS's will be open or closed when your time comes.

Your desired MOS may have a huge bonus or it may be closed, like I said, who knows..

Also, I might point out that you have to be a Sergeant to lateral to Counterintelligence and that almost always means a reenlistment is necessary. If they accept you.

Thanks everyone for your advice, I really appreciate it. Seems that there is alot my recruiter does not seem to want to tell me... He tells me to reenlist as Counter Intelligence I have to be a Cpl. He is also trying to persuade me to look at the reserve. I was thinking if I go reserve to just go to college so I later apply for OCS and hope to get in. I was looking at the INTEL positions though because I figured that would be a job that the Marine Corps would always need because of the trouble of going through to get Top Secret Security Clearances for people.
