Louis B. Robertshaw, 90, a Marine Corps lieutenant general, aviator and decorated veteran of three wars who retired in 1971 as deputy chief of staff for manpower at Marine Corps headquarters, died of cancer July 14 at Kent & Queen Anne's Hospital in Chestertown, Md.

He lived in Edgewater for more than 20 years before moving to Chestertown in 1998.

Gen. Robertshaw, a Pennsylvania native and 1935 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, served as a Dauntless dive bomber pilot in Guadalcanal during World War II. In the Korean War, he flew an F-9F Panther jet while stationed at Pusan Air Base in Korea. He flew an F-4D Phantom fighter and served as commanding general of the 1st Marine Air Wing in Da Nang during a tour of duty in the Vietnam War.

Other assignments took him to China and Japan.

His military decorations included the Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Merit with combat "V" and the Distinguished Flying Cross with two gold stars.

Gen. Robertshaw was born in Philadelphia and raised in Havertown, Pa. At the Naval Academy, he captained the 1935 football team and received honors for personal excellence in athletics.

In retirement, he received a paralegal degree from Anne Arundel Community College and worked about five years for the Anne Arundel County legal aid office. He also volunteered with disabled adults and served as an auxiliary police officer with the Anne Arundel County Police Department.

Survivors include his wife of 65 years, Marjo Robertshaw of Chestertown; four sons, Larry Robertshaw of Sicily, Chad Robertshaw of Schaumburg, Ill., David Robertshaw of Newport News, Va., and Dan Robertshaw of Edgewater; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
