Oshkosh Corp delivers "Swiss army knife" of vehicles to Marines

Oshkosh Corp. delivered the first "Swiss army knife of wheeled tactical vehicles" to the U.S. Marine Corps Friday.

Oshkosh Corp. President and Chief Operating Officer Charlie Szews compared the company's new Logistics Vehicle System Replacement to the versatile utility knife during a ceremony to commemorate the first of 425 LVSRs the Marine Corps ordered. The order came at a cost of $176 million and will supplement its aging fleet of cargo vehicles.

"This vehicle can handle almost any task," Szews said. "This LVSR is far advanced compared to the Logistic Vehicle System that has been a Marine Corps mainstay since the 1980s."

The LVSR features Oshkosh Corp. innovations such as an independent suspension, advanced electronics for diagnostic and prognostic analysis of the vehicle and a versatile design that allows it to carry everything from containers to bridges to fuel containers to boats. It can reach speeds in excess of 60 miles per hour, has the ability to traverse 5 feet of water, and has armor kits to increase survivability. In addition, it comes in three formats: cargo; tractor, to pull additional loads; and wrecker for towing.

"Many of the first trucks we deliver will be immediately sent to a combat zone, either Iraq or Afghanistan," Oshkosh Defense segment President Andy Hove said. "We believe there isn't another vehicle as mobile, as well-protected and that can transport as much payload as this one."

U.S. Marine Corps Land Systems Program Executive Officer Bill Taylor noted the Marines ordered 1,400 Logistic Vehicle Systems more than 25 years ago from the company, then Oshkosh Truck. He told the crowd of employees gathered for the ceremony that the LVSR will help address one of the biggest challenges the Marines face in Afghanistan: getting supplies and equipment into the areas soldiers have to go.

"This vehicle is capable, it's mobile, it's disproportionately mobile compared to its size," Taylor said.

In addition, Oshkosh officials pointed out that the LVSR shares a lot of components with other vehicles used in military and Marine Corps operations such as the Medium Tactical Vehicle Replacement, which means it can save the military time and money when it comes to repair and education.
