Seeing War Through a Marine’s Eyes

He’s among hundreds of Marines and Sailors who came home from Afghanistan yesterday.
They are the last of the 3rd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment to get back to North Carolina.
We take a look at this Marine’s view of war.
Finally home, after seven months of ground fighting in southern Afghanistan.
LCpl. Tim Solitro says, “Obviously it’s a country that’s been left behind”.

Solitro is proud to have left an Afghanistan that’s very different from the one he found: “By the time we left they had electricity, they’re working on getting a pipeline to get running water and we’re actually making a difference there.“

He’s 20 years old; mature enough to help the people of Afghanistan feel safe when they saw the Marines.

Solitro says, “We make sure we’re protecting them and make sure we talk to them and let them know if you have a problem you come to the Marines or the Army and you let us know what we can do and we’ll solve it for you.“

And now that Solitro is home from working to win hearts and minds, he’s grateful to focus on the ones he loves here at home.

Solitro is originally from Philadelphia. This was his first deployment.
