THE INVASION OF CONEY ISLAND
By BILL SANDERSON
May 22, 2009 --
Rifle-toting Marines invaded Coney Island by helicopter yesterday morning -- and the city quickly surrendered to their demands for rides on the Wonder Wheel and the Cyclone.
A dozen members of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit from Camp Lejeune, NC, arrived at the beach in a Sea Knight helicopter.
The "raid" was part of the ceremony opening Coney Island for the summer.
In just minutes, the rifle squad attained its objective -- the Boardwalk -- as the fighters were cheered on by Brooklynites.
"It's a chance for the citizens of New York City and the surrounding environment to see their Marines in action," said Gunnery Sgt. Chris Randazzo, a New York-based corps spokesman.
Once the invasion was over, the troops changed their objective to eat ing Nathan's hot dogs and hopping on some of the fa bled rides.
