Ex-Marines Say Green Served In Harsh Conditions
Last Update: 5/13 5:10 pm

PADUCAH, Ky. (AP) - Two former Marines say an ex-soldier facing a possible death sentence after being convicted of rape and murder in Iraq served in harsh wartime conditions that impaired judgment.

Retired Marine Lt. Col. Andrew Horne and former Marine lawyer Gary Solis told jurors Wednesday that stress from combat can impair a soldier's ability to make good decisions.

Both men were called by attorneys for former 101st Airborne Division Pfc. Steven Dale Green of Midland, Texas. Green is in the third day of the penalty phase of his trial. Jurors convicted him last week of the rape and murder of 14-year-old Abeer Qassim al-Janabi and the shooting death of her family in Mahmoudiya, Iraq.

Defense attorneys are trying to persuade jurors to sentence Green to life in prison. Prosecutors say his crimes warrant a death sentence.
