Eatery steps up to serve area Marines

The owners and staff of Mario's Italian Cafe in Rancho Mirage fed about 350 Marines at the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms last week.

Owners Carl and Delia Schuch and three employees drove the antipasta and baked mostaccioli to Twentynine Palms on April 22 and volunteered their time to serve — something the Schuches do every five or six months, Carl Schuch said.

The cooks at Mario's started working the night before to make the 10 large pans of pasta and 12 pans of salad.

“It was a lot of fun,” Carl Schuch said. “They do so much for them, and we do so little for them.”

Among the thanks the Schuches have received: A Marine Corps flag signed by dozens of Marines, now displayed in the restaurant at 42-418 Bob Hope Drive.
