They fight and fuel up, above and below the ocean's surface. Three Navy warships, a Coast Guard cutter and a Canadian Navy oiler will glide into Port Everglades on Monday.

They will call the South Florida port home for the next seven days while more than 1,000 sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen enjoy liberty during this year's Fleet Week.

Military personnel will conduct tours, attend receptions, compete in firefighting exercises, visit schools and hospitals, give blood, build homes and showcase their culinary skills.

Area residents can mingle with the sailors at two parties: one at the Paradise Shops Courtyard at the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Hollywood from 6 to 10 p.m. Monday, and the other at Briny's Irish Restaurant and Pub, 305 S. Andrews Ave., Fort Lauderdale, from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

For the first time since the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, the public can tour the ships without being part of a pre-screened group. But if you didn't register last week, you won't be able to get into the port or on board. That leaves the jetty on the inlet's north side, off the public beach, as the best spot to snap a photo, wave a flag or cheer the sailors, Marines and Coast Guardsmen as the ships enter the port between 8 and 11 a.m. Monday.
