Illinois Marine in WW II awarded his Medals Saturday

METROPOLIS, IL – In a very impressive ceremony today, Lowell Williams was awarded his World War II medals, which he had waited 60 years to receive. Mr. Williams was originally from Pope County and moved from the area to North Carolina years ago. When the members at the Metropolis American Legion learned from family members that he had not receive all the medals he deserved they took action to get them awarded in his home state of Illinois. At the ceremony today Mr. Williams stated his fellow soldiers deserved them for giving the ultimate sacrifice on the battlefield and not making it home. Mr. Williams served as a Corporal in the U. S. Marines from 1943 to 1946. Today he was awarded his Combat Action Ribbon, Presidential Unit Citation Ribbon Bar, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal with Bronze Campaign Stars, World War II Victory Medal, Navy Occupation Service Medal with Asia Clasp and The Rifle Sharpshooter Badge, which he once had but misplaced.
