how important would you say it is to know your general orders before you ship off?

I would say it is pretty important. It will save you a lot of time in recruit training learning them, and with that time you can study other knowledge.

Learn them now, they are easy to learn

Learn your general orders. But what is more important is while you are in receiving platoon, while you are on firewatch learn how to report your post as soon as you can.

Yes, good point! I was in Receiving Barracks Firewatch and met the OOD. All I could say was, "Hello?"

The OOD promptly taught me how to salute and report my post.

Who were your DI's? I was Alpha Company over two and a half years ago. I doubt many of my DI's are still on the depot by now.

Wow, SSgt. Cortes, if its the same one I'm thinking of was Sgt. Cortes and our kill hat. Man, were we scared of that Marine, haha . If I remember correctly we were his first platoon he was with all the way from pickup to graduation, he joined the company mid way through the previous cycle.
